BARC is a multi-disciplinary research organization and hasgenerated a number of spin-off technologies. It offers the know-how on anon-exclusive and as-is-where-is basis. BARC is interested in popularizing theknow-how/ process/ product/ technology of NISARGRUNA, SHESHA and Solid wastecomposting technologies for SWACHHA BHARAT and community benefits to Hotels andResorts.

The hospitality industry faces a major challenge in kitchenwaste disposal. Resorts have one more problem of dry leaves, flowers etc. Todispose of these bio mass related waste requires a sustainable waste managementsolution. There are manylicensee of BARC’s developed technologies who are giving waste managementsolution to various industry as per their need.

he NISARGRUNA technology has been developed fordecentralized processing of the biodegradable waste. The project has tremendouspotential to support the ever depleting energy sector by generating fuel andmanure required for soil applications. The main aim of the NISARGRUNA plant isto pay back Nature's loan in the form in which NATURE will appreciate. Thistechnology offers a comprehensive solution for handling the biodegradable wastematerial and employs "Zero garbage, zero effluent" method for wastedisposal. A substantial portion of our biodegradable waste is food waste(38-40%) which can generate about 60-80 m3 of biogas (about 35-40 Kgmethane) per ton of waste. This can be used as fuel for domestic purposes or generationof electricity. Organic manure is another byproduct of this technology. Thiscomprises a quantum of 10% of the total waste processed having carbon tonitrogen ratio of 12:1 which is excellent soil conditioner. Main advantagesof NISARGRUNA technology are -

ü This plant processes all types of biodegradablewaste.

ü This plants uses mixer for homogenization ofwaste.

ü There is a separation of aerobic and anaerobicphases.

ü Thermophilic bacteria are developed atpre-digestor stage which enhances the degradation of waste.

ü Most of the effluent water is recycled whichsaves about 60% water.

Inorder to manage the biodegradable waste generated in smaller housing societies, restaurants, a novel, compact helical shaped waste converter known as SHESHAhas been developed. This allows decentralized processing of the biodegradablewaste. The system has tremendous potential to process the waste as well asgeneration of good quality fuel and manure required for soil applications.Different capacity systems are available from 10kg, 25kg, 50kg, 100kg per day.Main advantages of waste converter system are -

ü  Helical shaped digester made from lowcost PVC pipes.

ü  Saving major cost of construction andMS dome required for conventional designs.

ü  Suitable for skid mounting on avehicle or wheels required for processing waste from smallersocieties/residential complexes.

ü  Have inbuilt suitability of biogasrecycling for methane enrichment.

ü Suitablefor online monitoring of process parameters.

Another RapidComposting Technology for decomposition of dry leaves, kitchen waste andtemple waste is also developed. A single microbe (cellulolytic fungus) basedformulation has been developed for decomposition of many types of biodegradablewastes like kitchen/market waste, dry plant matter (including coconut leaves),straw/agricultural residue and holy waste from temples. Its applicationshortens the duration of degradation from years and months (required fornatural processes, depending on type of biomass) to a few weeks. Additionally,it greatly reduces the cost of transportation involved in disposal of suchwastes. The compost generated in this process has high carbon content whichwill be beneficial in enriching organic matter-depleted soils. This technologyis based on a single, safe and beneficial microbe, and hence simple to adopt. It will also be an important contribution towards “Swachh Bharat Mission”. Thistechnology is useful for Municipalities, Housing Societies, Institutionalcanteens, Markets, Temples, Nurseries, Orchards, farms, Biotechnology relatedcompanies and companies that mass produce microbial cultures etc. Mainadvantages of this technologies are –

ü This technology is an easy to adopt eco-friendlyalternative to waste dumping

ü Formulation is simple to mass produce andversatile for different wastes

ü Compost generated can be used as a good soilconditioner and nutrient source

ü Adds vital organic matter for soil and improvescrop health
