Sub: 21st Century Security and Safety issue for Hoteliers
Even as we watch and read the political and forensic postmortem of 26/11 event, as hoteliers it is important for us to remember that our guests and customers have a right to expect and demand a safe and secure hospitality experience. It is important that a property be operated efficiently and profitably from the perspective of owners and investors. A property will enjoy competitive edge when responded to these expectations by implementing quality security and safety programs.
One of the most important responsibilities of a Property Manager is providing security – i.e. Protecting people – guests, employees, others and assets.
Security concerns are greatly on the increase because of crime, law suits, and failures to provide adequate security.
Property Managers have a legal duty to provide “Reasonable care”, for the protection of guests and their invitees and are held responsible for injuries caused.
Security efforts cover areas such as guest room security, key control, locks, access control, perimeter control, alarm systems, communication systems, CCTV, safe deposit boxes, Inventory control, credit and billing procedures, computer security, staffing, pre-employment screening, employee training, responsible service of alcoholic beverages, emergency procedures, safety procedures, record keeping and many others.
Prevention of Security problems through staff training and review of security procedures is to be an ongoing practice. Every property must have a security program where all employees are aware of their security responsibilities. Security program and security staffs are a management tool for effective management of the property. Security measures are be implemented and practiced without offending or inconveniencing guests, preserving the service industry image of every property. Inadequate procedures can be very damaging. Inn keeper’s duty and standard of care is legally defined as taking REASONABLE CARE to protect against FORSEEABLE ACTS.
Property Managers need to be aware of their responsibility and understand their roles in shaping societal perception of Security and Safety issues in the media. Managers must also recognize these concerns as they are expressed through legal and political system as well as media.
