As you are aware, consumer goods markets in India are flooded with spurious, counterfeit and
contraband products. Foods,toiletries,medicines,electronic goods, and even
engineering goods are duplicated by unscrupulous elements in the society and are sold in the markets as original brands.In the process, they cause untold damage to the society as a whole and to the industry in particular.Among the sufferers because of this evil, are also the revenue authorities like sales tax,customs,excise, income tax and others, who lose huge sums running into thousands of crores because spurious products attract no duties,no taxes or no levies of any kind.
To focus on this issue, CII conducted a Seminar on 7th March 2007. The Seminar addressed the issue from various perspectives – consumers, industry representatives, government revenue departments, customs and police etc.
As a follow-up measure, a Committee comprising of FDA, Metrology and Customs was formed to look into the issue. The issue was also raised with the Home Minister of Maharashtra. All these efforts led to some successes and several godowns of spurious products were raided by the police resulting in seizures of large quantities of contraband products.
To take this important initiative forward, CII is conducting the second edition of the Conference on Contraband, Counterfeit and Spurious Products on 22nd May 2009 at South Hall, Mayfair Rooms, Worli. The conference will be addressed, amongst others, by Commissioner of FDA, Chief Commissioner of Customs and Controller of Legal Metrology, Maharashtra. The Jt Commissioner of Mumbai Police – Crime has also been invited to speak at the conference.
